Vaikom
Block Panchayat

Vaikom Block Panchayat is one of the important rural local self-government institutions in Kottayam district, Kerala, functioning under the three-tier Panchayati Raj system. It was established following the implementation of the Kerala Panchayati Raj framework to coordinate and promote the overall development of the rural areas within its jurisdiction.

Located in the historic Vaikom Taluk, the Block Panchayat derives its identity from the ancient town of Vaikom, renowned for the centuries-old Vaikom Mahadeva Temple and the historic Vaikom Satyagraha (1924–1925), a landmark movement against caste discrimination that played a significant role in India's social reform movement. The region has long been known for its rich cultural heritage, agriculture, inland waterways, fishing, and coir-based livelihoods.

Today, Vaikom Block Panchayat serves as the intermediate tier between the District Panchayat and the Gram Panchayats. It currently comprises six Gram Panchayats:

• Vechoor
• Thalayazham
• T.V. Puram
• Maravanthuruthu
• Udayanapuram
• Chempu

With its blend of historical significance and developmental initiatives, Vaikom Block Panchayat continues to contribute to the socio-economic progress of the rural communities in the western part of Kottayam district while preserving the region's unique cultural and environmental heritage.
